Did Winckelmann read Baumgarten? As Halle is becoming increasingly important to my long-term project, I was thinking about the philosophers while listening to a lecture on eighteenth-century antiquarian art scholarship and the relation between textual and object-based knowledge. Winckelmann prioritised text over image, making clear his preference in the antinomy between reading and seeing in appreciating artworks of antiquity. Another fun fact: apparently Winckelmann slammed Lessing for writing about art in Italy when he had seen the country 'only in his dreams.'
