[Cafe] Hyochang Park Resident's Cafe Recommendations, 2025 ver.

mtl

Personally, I think Hyochang-dong is a great "sky garden" to live in. The walks downhill are lovely, but Gyeongui Line Forest Park can get crowded. I prefer places with a nice atmosphere and private rooms over crowded spaces, and that's why I like this area around Hyochang Park. Here are my cafe recommendations.

My Top 5 Cafes

1. MTL (More Than Less)

MTL is, without a doubt, the top cafe in Hyochang-dong. It attracts stylish people—the kind of folks into running, design, architecture, fashion, and music, or just looking for a great place to work. They even have items that aren't officially released in Korea yet. The music is fantastic, and it's almost impossible to find a seat on weekends. It's also a great spot to bring your dog. The lighting and botanicals are perfect. I give it 100 points! I actually prefer the Hyochang-dong location over the Hannam one because it feels more spacious and relaxed. The staff also gives off a very laid-back vibe.

2. MATASSA

In my opinion, this is a relatively new cafe, having opened about a year ago, but it's a hot spot for the hip crowd from Sookmyung Women's University. When you walk in, you're greeted by a fragrance that reminds me of my travels in France. The branding, with its 80s American vibe, is exceptionally well done. The desserts are delicious. The young women who work here handle the branding like true professionals.

3. KIHARA

They import their filter coffee directly from Finland. This cafe has the best music selection and overall sense of style in Hyochang-dong, playing artists like 070 Shake and Frank Ocean. While the main menu changes, the side dishes, like their bread, are absolutely amazing. The space is small, which makes it feel private and peaceful. (In my heart, this is my number two.)

4. OTO

The male owner is incredibly kind. The combination of the pale green paint and the floor tiles shows off an amazing sense of style. It's just a genuinely great place.

5. COCOON

This is a great spot for brunch; the food is really tasty. However, it's a bit small, so it's better for grabbing brunch than for working.

On weekdays, I'm at work, and on weekends, it's always sad when I can't find a seat.

(I've omitted many other cafes)

  • There are also many cafes near the basketball court in Hyochang Park and towards Sookmyung Women's University.
  • There are also plenty of cafes for an older crowd, but I've skipped those.
  • In Gongdeok, there's Fritz.
